(
Parliament of the World’s Religions

Since 1993, a Parliament of the World’s Religions has convened every five years in a major international city (Chicago 1993, Cape Town 1999, Barcelona 2004). Sponsored by the Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions, the 2009 Parliament will take place in Melbourne, Australia. Over 10,000 participants will come to Melbourne for the Parliament. The 2009 Parliament will turn worldwide attention to Melbourne as a destination city with international appeal. The Parliament will run for seven days with approximately 450 events including keynote addresses, seminars, conferences, debates, performances, concerts and exhibitions.
Parliament participants will work with others and within their own traditions to craft faithful responses to:
indigenous reconciliation
global poverty and global warming
environmental care and degradation
education of the young and the challenges of social disengagement
voluntary and forced migration
artistic expression and spirituality and
the value of sports
In today’s world, understanding between people of different traditions is not optional. It is essential. The 2009 Parliament will give people of faith, spirit and goodwill new reason to say that peace is still possible.

Educating World Citizens for the 21st Century: Educators, Scientists and Contemplatives Dialogue on Cultivating a Healthy Mind, Brain and Heart
with His Holiness The Dalai Lama
(
Mind and Life Institute
)
How can our educational system evolve to meet the challenges of the 21st century? How will we educate people to be compassionate, competent, ethical, and engaged citizens in an increasingly complex and interconnected world?
Mind and Life XIX brings together world-renowned educators, scientists, and contemplatives, with the Dalai Lama presiding, to explore the emerging field of contemplative learning and its potential contribution to a new paradigm in education. This interdisciplinary dialogue will pool new ideas in educational theory and practice, philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience with the wisdom of the world’s great contemplative traditions. Our intent is for the synergy of these converging disciplines to inspire a new vision of education that focuses on the development of the whole person within more caring and effective schools and communities. We envision an educational system that will nurture the heart as well as the mind, and that will create compassionate, engaged, and ethical world citizens whose skills and abilities are not only used for personal growth and advancement, but also for the good of the world.

The Believing Game as a Model for Thinking
Annual Conference
(
Assembly for Expanding Perspectives on Learning
)
The purpose of this conference is to explore the believing game, which Peter Elbow also calls “methodological believing,” as a way to think more clearly.
We contrast the believing game with the “doubting game” --- being skeptical, questioning, criticizing all ideas in order to uncover hidden flaws---which has come to dominate our culture’s conception of good thinking. The believing game challenges the monopoly of this skeptical tradition: it represents the ability to enter into all ideas in order to uncover hidden virtues. It asks us not just to listen to all views that differ from our own and hold back from arguing with them; not just to restate them without bias (as Carl Rogers advocated); but actually to try to believe them. Believing and doubting are both necessary tools or methodologies for scrutinizing and testing ideas, but “believing” is a refreshing and underused method that can enhance our lives as well as our ideas, and that provides a powerful means of developing our thinking.
We will gather in the beautiful Colorado mountains to interact with Peter Elbow and with each other. After Elbow’s introductory plenary, he will participate in two other plenaries designed to collect and explore the richness of perspectives that you as conference registrants bring with you. Our goal is to provide a venue for each of you to enrich and deepen your understanding of the believing game and its possibilities.

Women’s Interfaith Dialogue Encounter
Seeking a safe space for women to experience mutual sharing across our differences of culture, religion and life experience, to be able to tell others about our own traditions and ask questions about other traditions without fearing that we are foolish or giving offense. We are eager to be exposed to each other’s practices, music, food, prayer, philosophies and histories. However, we seek more than information about other religions. Rather we wish to deeply understand the lived experience of different cultures and faiths. The emphasis is on interaction, dialogue and “encounter.”

Study of Gandhi’s Seven Steps to Global Change
8 meetings, Sundays 4-6 pm, April 5 to May 31, 2009
Mahatma Gandhi’s simple principles of constructive social program apply to today’s worldwide problems of exploitation, injustice, and poverty. In the book Gandhi’s Seven Steps to Global Change, Prof. Guy de Mallac identifies seven global problems, develops a solution for each of them using Gandhian principles and lists concrete examples of possible actions we can take toward implementing each solution. During each meet, we will read the text, meditate on the ideas, and discuss ways to turn the ideas to concrete social action. We will possibly sing and dance to raise our spirits in the effort. We will take turns to lead each session.
Circle Leads: VJ Mohan and Susan Owicki.

Neighboring Faiths
(Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto)
Adults are invited to be part of this exciting curriculum that the middle schoolers are using this year. Part of their Sunday morning experiences involve learning about other faith communities, including worshipping with their congregations. To participate, please join the middle schoolers and their teachers in Room A at 9:30 on the morning of these field trips.
In learning about Buddhism, they will visit Ananda, Temple of Self-Realization January 25. Jerusalem Baptist Church is the site for their worship with an African American church February 8. Plans for the study of Islam include a visit to a mosque. Details are to be determined.
We strongly advise adult participants to study about the religious traditions BEFORE the visits, as the youth do. The CRE Committee has purchased several copies of Huston Smith’s The World’s Religions, and these are available in the Hamaker Library.

Meaning in your Work and your Life
(Network of Spiritual Progressives)
The Network of Spiritual Progressives is putting on a conference for professionals who recognize the need for A New Bottom Line in American Society in our working environment. People are often limited by the money, the materialism, and the "me first" attitude that prevail in our culture and at work. We are gathering people who recognize the need to make a contribution at work and who want to find other allies in their discipline to help build momentum to revive the values of love, generosity and care in their workplace and professions.
This conference will help you:
Connect with other like-minded individuals who want to change the dominant paradigm in your work and in your personal life.
Build a Network of Supporters to help achieve these changes.
Law - Medicine - Education - Journalism - Psychology - Non-profits - High-tech - Corporations
What would these be like if they were governed by a "New Bottom Line" and what strategies are there to make these changes possible?

Opening the Door to Interspirituality
An Evening with Edward Bastian
(Interfaith Center at the Presidio)
SECOND TUESDAY POTLUCK
Huston Smith had no problem staying a Methodist Christian while practicing Buddhist meditation. But sharing spiritual practices - including prayer and meditation - between and among different traditions, is a taboo subject for some. For others it is an arena of interfaith development that is long overdue. Spiritual Pathways Foundation has been a pioneer in exploring interspirituality, sponsoring programs, retreats, and academic degree programs in the subject. Founder Dr. Ed Bastian joins us over dinner to tell us the story of the Foundation and the opportunities it represents.
Bring food to share and join the dialogue.

(Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto)
A Workshop with the Rev. Scotty McLennan
What's right and what's wrong with the atheism of Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett and Christopher Hitchens? These new best-selling atheists claim that religious liberals are in large part responsible for the violence and bigotry perpetrated in the name of religion, since we provide a cloak of respectability to an otherwise irrational and dangerous enterprise. Let's look at some of their writing in this session and decide if UU's are more part of the problem or of the solution.
Rev. Scotty McLennan is a Community Minister associated with UUCPA and is Dean of Religious Life at Stanford.
